An Evening with Professor T.S. McMillin

Join Professor of English T.S. McMillin at Visible Voice Books in
Tremont on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 7:00pm for a book reading and signing. Professor McMillin will be reading from his latest book, The Meaning of Rivers: Flow & Reflection in American Literature (American Land & Life Series, University of Iowa Press, 2011).

In addition to The Meaning of Rivers, T. S. McMillin is the author of
Our Preposterous Use of Literature: Emerson & the Nature of Reading (University of Illinois Press, 2000). He has written numerous articles on the American Transcendentalists, including "Beauty Meets Beast: Emerson's English Traits," an essay in the collection Emerson for the Twenty-First Century: Global Perspectives on an American Icon (University of Delaware Press, 2010), and is currently working on a new book of river-related essays.

Along with teaching courses in American literature and environmental studies, he has survived a stint as department chair, performed with the Josh Ritter Band (once), and officiated weddings (twice). He was named the Only Flower of Meditation in the Wilderness by a fortune cookie from a local restaurant.

Visible Voices was voted "coolest bookstore to hang out in" by Scene Magazine in 2010, and has a great atmosphere with a wine bar. Some snacks will be provided, but drink costs are on your own. After the reading, mingle with T.S. McMillin as you continue to enjoy browsing books, wine and conversation with other Obies.

An Evening with Debra Nagy ‘00/’02 and Les Délices

Join Les Délices and Debra Nagy '00/'02 as they bring alive the world of dance with Caractères de la danse at 8:00pm on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Tregoning & Co. Gallery in Cleveland. Mingle with Debra and the other musicians at a post-concert reception.

This January concert features a lively program dedicated to music for dancing - from its social roots in the ballroom to the idiosyncratic, highly expressive music written for the first prima ballerinas on the theater stage.  Les Délices welcomes back gamba player Josh Lee as a guest artist, one of the brightest stars in the younger generation of gamba players in this country. Musically and personally, he's at once disarming, affable, intensely expressive, and fun. Debra will also be joined by harpsichordist Michael Sponseller (BM '97, AD '99), and violinist Julie Andrijeski (who teaches annually at Oberlin's summer Baroque Performance Institute).

More information about Les Délices can be found at http://www.lesdelices.org.

Debra has been kind enough to offer Oberlin Friends and Family a 20% discount for tickets ordered in advance online (regular ticket prices are $20, senior $18). Enter the discount code Obie111 to take advantage of this discount. Tickets are general seating, with doors opening a half-hour before the concert begins.

Visit https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/192772 to purchase tickets.

Tickets can be purchased by cash or checks at the door (sorry no credit cards at this time). If you'd like the discount, be sure to buy in advance.

There are 4 steps up into the gallery at Tregoning & Co. Ample parking is available in lot just north of the gallery.

Hardship to Hope: African American Art from the Karamu Workshop

In 1910, amid segregation, race riots and great social change, Russell Jelliffe and Rowena Woodham met at Oberlin College. She was president of the Oberlin Women’s Suffrage League; he had seen a black friend turned away from the YMCA as a boy. They bonded through a shared belief that race didn’t have to be a destructive, divisive force. After marriage in 1915, they were invited to Cleveland by the Men’s Club of the Second Presbyterian Church to organize a settlement house, and moved to Cleveland’s “Roaring Third” Ward. This potent team shared the belief that they could effect positive change by bringing together blacks and whites to work together on something of need to the community.

In this spirit, they founded the Playhouse Settlement, later renamed Karamu House, a multiracial gathering place where community members explored the performing and fine arts. In a 1989 interview, Rowena described their concept – “People, from the beginning of time, seem to have understood each other best when they shared their culture.”

A group of talented African-American artists, trained at Karamu during this time, gained recognition both in the city and across the nation for their vibrant and dramatic artworks that depicted the truths about life in Cleveland during the Great Depression. The Jelliffes themselves gathered a dynamic collection of prints, drawings and paintings, given to Cleveland State University after their deaths.

This important and powerful collection, a window to a turbulent and creative time in American history, will be displayed at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, in cooperation with Cleveland State University, mid-September through December 2011. Artists represented in the exhibition are Richard R. Beatty, Elmer W. Brown, Fred Carlo, Zell Ingram, Charles L. Sallée Jr., Hughie Lee-Smith, William E. Smith and Curtis E. Tann.
