Alumni Artist Featured at FAVA
Rebecca Cross '84, fiber artist, along with painter Annette Poitau, is featured in the show "Liaisons: a Conversation in Textiles and Painting" at FAVA Gallery in Oberlin. The exhibit runs through July 10, 2011.

Founded in 1979, The Firelands Association for the Visual Arts is an independent, non-profit art organization in Oberlin, Ohio dedicated to enhancing public appreciation of and participation in the visual arts through exhibitions and related educational and community activities. FAVA presents changing exhibits of high quality artwork in a variety of styles and media.
Support for FAVA comes from memberships, contributions by individuals and business friends of the arts, commissions on sales, and fundraising events. FAVA also receives support from the Nord Family Foundation, the Community Foundation of Lorain County, the Stocker Foundation, the Nordson Corporation Foundation, the Bill Long Foundation, the Oberlin Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Ohio Arts Council. In 1994, the board of FAVA established an endowment fund for the organization at the Community Foundation of Lorain County to provide future support for exhibitions and education outreach programs.
Membership is open to artists and friends of the arts. Members receive discounts on purchases, class tuition, and show registration fees, as well as information about upcoming exhibitions, class offerings and invitations to members-only special events.

Oberlin Faculty featured at MoCA Cleveland
A new exhibit at MoCA Cleveland has just opened, entitled Delicious Fields : Ohio Photographers at Work, and features work by Pipo Nguyen-Duy, Professor of Studio Art, Photography at Oberlin College. Professor Nguyen-Duy's biography is here. The exhibition runs through August 21, 2011.
From MoCA Cleveland's website, "Rolling farmlands, looming factories, majestic matter-of-factness - these descriptions apply to Ohio as a cultural and geographic site distinct from other regions of the United States. But what can that mean for photographers working in our midst? "Delicious Fields" derives from "Champs Delicieux," a portfolio of photograms created by Man Ray and published by Tristan Tzara in Paris in 1922. As an avant-garde publication heralding the beginning of photographic surrealism in Paris, the images in Champs Delicieux represented revolution in their own time and are reprised in experimental contemporary photography. Man Ray's images, created by placing everyday objects onto a sheet of photographic paper exposed to light, offered a scrambling of reality. Just so, the nine Ohio photographers exhibited here overlay personal narrative on the Ohio landscape, or conversely, subject this and other topography to overt manipulation and examination. What results is a selection of photographic work imbued with the spirit of the enigmatic, as descended from its French forbearers."

March Event at MOCA
The Oberlin Club of Cleveland invites you and a guest to a very special alumni event at MOCA. From Then to Now: Masterworks of Contemporary African American Art will display pieces from the Allen Memorial Art Museum - unprecedented in our region, the exhibition brings together for the first time the rich holdings of contemporary African-American art drawn from preeminent collections of contemporary art in the region including the Allen Memorial Art Museum. Addressing a range of themes and issues, the exhibition presents an overview of the rich cultural heritage voiced by contemporary African-American artists in their examination of history, identity, and memory.

The Allen Art Museum at MOCA Cleveland
As many of you may know, the Allen Art Museum has been temporarily closed for a renovation project, opening back up in Spring 2011. A portion of the collection has been loaned to other esteemed museums throughout the country, including Cleveland's own Museum of Contemporary Art.
AAM's loan is very important to MOCA's newest exhibition, *From Then to Now* : Masterworks of Contemporary African-American Art. Roughly 15 major works from the AAM are included in this show.
The show is on view January 29th, 2010 through May 9th, 2010.
Come to the opening night celebration on Friday, January 29, 2010. This is FREE and open to the public.
The evening starts at 6pm with a talk entitled "blackfacers, hustlers, oracles, & saplings," an interview between artist iona rozeal brown and exhibition curator Megan Lykins Reich. What are Hoochie Puti? Where is HEZ? Why does Yoshi ride a Big Wheel? These and other questions will be answered. Additional questions provided by the students who worked with brown on her January 2010 residency will round out the discussion.

Unprecedented in our region, the exhibition brings together for the first time the rich holdings of contemporary African American art drawn from preeminent collections of contemporary art in the region - the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College, the Akron Art Museum, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Progressive Corporation, and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Presented will be works by some of the most important artists of our time in a range of media - works on paper, painting, sculpture, and installations. The exhibition features 25 artists, and begins with signature pieces by such pioneering figures of the 1970s and 1980s as Romare Bearden or Alma Thomas, and continues up to the present with prime examples of works by artists such as Lenardo Drew, Alison Saar, Willie Cole, David Hammons, Lorna Simpson, Carrie Mae Weems, René Green, Kara Walker and Kehinde Wiley, among others. Addressing a range of themes and issues, the exhibition presents an overview of the rich cultural heritage voiced by contemporary African-American artists in their examination of history, identity, and memory. Their universal search for meaning in facing the past and confronting the challenges of the present binds these works together in wha t ultimately represents a celebration of and triumph of the creative spirit.

Ensemble Les Délices inaugurates Gallery Concert Series
Debra Nagy, '00 and '02, asked me to publicize the inaugural concert in a Gallery Concert Series that she is starting this fall in Cleveland with her chamber group, Les Délices. Michael Sponseller, '97 and '00, will also be performing as part of the group.
Ensemble Les Délices inaugurates a new Gallery Concert Series at the William Busta Gallery (2731 Prospect Ave., Cleveland) on Saturday, October 10, 2009. Audience members will have the opportunity to enjoy the gallery (which will open at 7:30pm), an informal hour-long concert (starting at 8:00pm), and a reception.
As Les Délices' director Debra Nagy explains, "The kind of music we perform was originally enjoyed in 'salons' that fostered interactions between performers, composers, patrons, and artists. I'm interested in cultivating that atmosphere in the present day. The audience will be invited to come early, check out the art and get comfortable in the space. The concert itself will feel informal and inclusive, lasting about an hour. Afterward, we'll all be able to enjoy a reception where it's my hope that the interplay between the art and music will be the jumping off point for conservations. It's my hope, too, that people coming to concerts in Cleveland's gallery districts will discover and enjoy all that these reborn art neighborhoods have to offer."
Les Délices will present a total of three Gallery Concerts this year. Besides their inaugural concert on October 10, they will perform at Tregoning & Company (1300 W. 78th St inside the W. 78th St. Studios Complex) on Saturday, February 20 and on Saturday, May 22, 2010.
