The Big Parade
On Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 10am to 4pm, a cherished Oberlin tradition takes once again to the streets! Since its inception in 2002, the Big Parade has brought Oberlin residents of all ages together in a homespun, imaginative, community arts event that depends on wide-spread collaboration and team work. Groups involved in the Big Parade work relatively independently, but towards a common goal: to represent themselves and the town of Oberlin in a joyous and spectacular event featuring music, dancing, costumes, bikes, art cars, floats and whatever else people can come up with. A festival with various performances and live music follows the parade in Tappan Square. There is a free barbeque lunch, games, tables for many local organizations (all with an activity), crafts, face painting, a moon-bounce, a pie-eating contest, a free raffle, and much more!

Oberlin Orchestra
Oberlin Conservatory piano student Scott Cuellar ’11 will perform Prokofiev’s immensely popular Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Oberlin Orchestra on Wednesday, May 11 at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel. Last fall, Cuellar was one of four winners of the conservatory’s annual Concerto Competition. Each of the winners earned the opportunity to perform with either the Oberlin Orchestra, or the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra over the course of the school year; this concert marks the final of the four. Featured guest conductor Kevin Noe will lead the performance, and the concert is free; no tickets are required. The program will also include Vaughan William’s “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis,” and Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra.
