Oberlin Faculty in Cleveland Art Show

The work of Nanette Yannuzzi-Macias and Arzu Ozkal, respectively Associate Professor of Studio Art and Visiting Assistant Professor of Studio Art, is being shown as part of Farmed: The New Agronomists, a show at SPACES. The show runs through July 10, 2011.

This exhibition will address themes of the production of food and goods through farming, either on a small, personal scale or the scale of large agri-business. The cotton in our t-shirts, the salad on our plates, the corn-syrup in our… everything were originally produced in gardens and on farms. Yet the rustic, romantic view of the lone farmer is a far cry from the reality behind the economic, genetic, environmental and political concerns that orbit usable-plant growth in our country. Artists and farmers will address these issues that affect us each greatly, but often invisibly.

The show also includes work by Michael Mercil, Amy Youngs, and Sara Rabinowitz.

More information on the show and on the artists can be found by visiting http://www.spacesgallery.org/project/farmed

Aimee Lee '99 and Korean papermaking at

Aimee Lee '99 is returning to the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Morgan Conservatory to give a demonstration and workshop on Korean paper making. Aimee was in town last year in August for her paper making, and is looking forward to coming back to the area.

Aimee Lee is an interdisciplinary artist who works in paper, book, performance, installation, and text arts. She received her BA in Visual Arts from Oberlin College and her MFA in Book and Paper Arts from Columbia College. Her post-graduate research as a Fulbright fellow focused on Korean papermaking and related craft forms. She exhibits and has been published and collected internationally. She travels extensively as an artist-in-residence and teaches and lectures nationwide.

The demo at CMA will be on Friday, May 13, from 6-8pm. Aimee will demonstrate the Japanese style of paper-making, which has roots in Korea. In 2010, she was an artist-in-residence at the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, where she and director Tom Balbo led a team in building the first Korean paper-making studio in the U.S.

The workshop "Textile into Book" will be held on Sat/Sun, May 14-15. The workshop description is as follows: "Soft cloth books aren't just for kids! In this class, you'll learn various techniques for incorporating textile and fiber arts with book arts to create unusual and tactile book objects. You will learn how to make paper yarn and use it to knit, cord, and twine it to create pages and covers. You'll also learn how to felt paper and have it handy to sew and quilt it into creations limited only by your imagination. Bring a sketchbook to keep track of ideas as well as scraps of fabric, yarn, rubber, plastic, and anything else you might want to include into your books. You will leave with at least one completed book and ways to make plenty more. This class is ideal for those who already have skills in knitting, crocheting, sewing or quilting, but is open to all levels."

For more information on the workshop, visit http://morganconservatory.org/tabs_other.html, and click on "Textile into Book."

Looking ahead

Because of Commencement/Reunion Weekend at the end of the month, and Cleveland’s proximity to Oberlin, there is no official event in May for the club. (If you haven’t yet done so, register today for CRW by visiting http://new.oberlin.edu/office/alumni) I do have some information on upcoming events for over the summer, however.

Alumni at the Ballpark
Join fellow Cleveland area Obies for the Second Annual Alumni Day at Progressive Field on June 17, 2011 at 7:05 as the Cleveland Indians battle the Pittsburgh Pirates! It’s Dollar Dog Night, so enjoy great food, fun and baseball with Oberlin Alumni, Friends and Family and stick around for fireworks after the game!

Look for more information to come, regarding the pre-game gathering and ticket information.

July Summer Picnic
Our annual summer picnic for alumni, current students and entering first-years is just around the corner. I’m looking for suggestions on good places to hold the picnic, preferably within Cleveland. Do you know of a great park, where we can reserve a shelter? The ability to grill and plug in appliances would be an added bonus. Please e-mail me your suggestions at kmcgirr@gmail.com. If you have contact information for the park, that would be very helpful. Thank you!

August Happy Hour
Is there a great restaurant or bar that you’d like to see us do a happy hour at? There are so many places in Cleveland, and we’ve barely scratched the surface. I’d love your suggestions – please e-mail me at kmcgirr@gmail.com.

The Big Parade
On Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 10am to 4pm, a cherished Oberlin tradition takes once again to the streets! Since its inception in 2002, the Big Parade has brought Oberlin residents of all ages together in a homespun, imaginative, community arts event that depends on wide-spread collaboration and team work. Groups involved in the Big Parade work relatively independently, but towards a common goal: to represent themselves and the town of Oberlin in a joyous and spectacular event featuring music, dancing, costumes, bikes, art cars, floats and whatever else people can come up with. A festival with various performances and live music follows the parade in Tappan Square. There is a free barbeque lunch, games, tables for many local organizations (all with an activity), crafts, face painting, a moon-bounce, a pie-eating contest, a free raffle, and much more!

Oberlin Conservatory piano student Scott Cuellar ’11 will perform Prokofiev’s immensely popular Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Oberlin Orchestra on Wednesday, May 11 at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel. Last fall, Cuellar was one of four winners of the conservatory’s annual Concerto Competition. Featured guest conductor Kevin Noe will lead the performance, and the concert is free; no tickets are required. The program will also include Vaughan William’s “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis,” and Lutoslawski’s Concerto for Orchestra.
