Join Mariann Janosko '63 and her husband Jerry Onken at the Lake Erie Creamery on Sunday, October 10 at 3pm. We will tour their creamery and taste their wonderful cheeses, and perhaps some other tasty local items. Mariann will also speak about the path that lead her from an English major to cheese making, and perhaps on her recent trip to Italy to learn how to make Italian cheeses. We will have an opportunity to also purchase the cheeses we taste. A wonderful event from Oberlin friends and family!
Lake Erie Creamery is a small urban creamery in the city of Cleveland, specializing in making artisan goat's milk cheese. Begun in 2006, the creamery occupies a corner of a redeveloped, multi-use building.
Mariann makes all the cheeses by hand. She begins by gently pasteurizing each 50-gallon batch to preserve the milk's quality and character. Then she adds cultures to the milk and starts it on its way to becoming cheese.
While some of the cheese is aging, Jerry sells and delivers the fresh chèvre. Until now, Jerry has sold all the cheese locally: to chefs committed to using fresh and local ingredients, at farmers' markets and at small retail outlets that care for our cheese the way we would.
Lake Erie Creamery also conserves resources by closing the loop in the farm-to-city cycle by sending cheese making byproducts back to the farm. The whey travels to the farm to feed Hampshire hogs and pastured poultry that then appear on menus at some of Cleveland's best restaurants.

Alumni Day at Progressive Field
Les Délices and Debra Nagy '00/'02
A note from Debra Nagy '00/'02:
Les Délices had a fabulous first season of Cleveland concerts and we have you – our supporters - to thank for our successes!
We performed live on WCPN’s Around Noon with Dee Perry & had all three of our concert recordings featured on WKSU.
We also had a slew of rave reviews for our concerts and CD in the local and national press. Highlights included NPR’s Harmonia naming our debut CD “One of the Top Ten Early Music Discoveries of 2009,” and ClevelandClassical.com dubbed our May 22 concert at Tregoning & Co. Gallery one of Cleveland’s most memorable performances this year.
Next season promises to be even better! We’ll return to the William Busta and Tregoning & Co. galleries for our Saturday night concerts, and we’re thrilled to be named artists in residence at Plymouth Church for 2010-11, where we’ll continue to present Sunday afternoon programs. For more on our 2010-11 season, click here.
Plus, Les Délices looks forward to its first Northeast tour in late-April/early-May 2011 with performances in Boston, MA and Providence, RI leading up to our New York debut at the Frick Collection on May 1, 2011!
Here’s wishing you a great summer! We look forward to seeing you at our next concerts in October!
With best wishes,
Debra

Aimee Lee '99 presents class on Korean paper-making
On August 7-8, at the Morgan Conservatory, Aimee Lee '99, the leading US hanji (Korean handmade paper) researcher, will guide students through the process of preparing fiber from mulberry bark, making sheets using the unique side-to-side Korean formation method, and drying hanji. Students will also be introduced to joomchi, which is paper felting, and jiseung, which is paper weaving. Korean papermaking, descended from China and a precursor to Japanese papermaking, has a long and illustrious history. With the rise of industrialism and modernization, it receded into obscurity but is still practiced today in countryside mills. This class is an excellent introduction to eastern papermaking and low-tech applications for handmade paper.
What a fabulous opportunity!
Here is the link to the classes and workshops: http://www.morganconservatory.org/tabs4-lst.html

Rick O'Donnell '79, published in North Coast Review
Rick O'Donnell '79, sent me the following: "I am excited to announce that my creative non-fiction story, “Eeny-Meeny-Miney-Mo” has been published in the spring issue of the North Coast Review. It is a three-part story. Part I tells of my father’s experience training and serving with African-American troops during World War II; Part II is the story of my first encounter with African-Americans and its lifelong consequence; and Part III explains how pejorative language, especially the many derogatory and racist phrases embedded in the American language not only defames ethnic groups, but also demeans the user."

The Oberlin Summer Theater Festival's 2010 production of William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing playfully exposes the comic conflict inherent in all romance. At the core of the play is the famous battle between the sexes wittily waged by Benedick and Beatrice, two confirmed bachelors. The play also features one of Shakespeare's funniest clown characters, Dogberry, the bungling malaprop-spouting constable who accidentally saves the day.
The play is set in Sicily at Leonato's elegant estate. The action begins when officers return victorious from war. A young officer, Claudio, confides to the Prince, Don Pedro, that he has fallen in love with their host's daughter, Hero. The Prince helps to woo Hero for Claudio. To pass the time before the wedding day, the men concoct a humorous plot to trick Benedick and Beatrice into falling in love with each other. Bent on foiling their romance, the Prince's brother, Don John, concocts a sinister plot of his own: he spreads slander that Hero has been unfaithful. Chaos erupts at the wedding ceremony and Benedick challenges Claudio to a duel. But just when everything seems lost, Dogberry's watchmen stumble in to save the day.
Directed by OSTF's Producing Artistic Director Paul Moser, Oberlin's summer production foregrounds the courtly elegance and humor of the piece. Garden settings, 1930s costumes, and live 1930s music conjure a summery, festival feel. OSTF is once again joining forces with costume designers from Kent State University in a collaboration that strives to realize the merriment and elegance of Shakespeare's comedy.
Returning to the festival is Equity actor Matthew Wright (Leonato) who appeared as Prospero in The Tempest last summer. Joining him will be David Bugher (Benedick) who played The Gentleman Caller in OSTF's production of The Glass Menagerie. Seen last year as Ariel in The Tempest, Oberlin alumna and visual artist Alexis MacNab (Hero) returns for her second season. Also returning is Oberlin alum and resident Aaron Mucciolo (Dogberry), Stephano and Alonso in OSTF's 2009 production of The Tempest. Clare McNulty (Beatrice) is a 2007 Oberlin graduate who has performed in several companies in NYC including the award-winning, Oberlin-founded Sinking Ship Productions.
