Christina Neilson, Oberlin's Renaissance and Baroque art historian, gives a public lecture next week at the Cleveland Museum of Art, sponsored by Case Western. The talk is titled: "A Harpy in the Workshop: Hybrid Techniques for Awakening Statues in Renaissance Florentine Art," and takes place on Wednesday March 23rd at 6:00 PM, in the Museum's recital hall.

Erik Inglis '89 to lecture at The Cleveland Art Museum

Erik Inglis '89, Associate Professor of Art History at Oberlin College, will present the annual Julius Fund Lecture in Medieval Art on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at 6:30 pm in the Recital Hall in The Cleveland Museum of Art with the topic, "Objects of Memory: The Later Medieval Reception of Earlier Medieval Art."

Collegium Musicum Reunion Concert
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Professor Steven Plank directing the Collegium Musicum of Oberlin. Over fifty alumni singers will return to campus for a gala concert on Saturday, February 20, featuring Thomas Tallis’ Spem in Alium as well as other compositions. This concert is sure to be spectacular. The concert will begin at 8pm in Warner Concert Hall at Oberlin Conservatory, 77 West College St., Oberlin, OH 44074. Admission is free.

EnviroAlums in Oberlin
Wow! What a response I've had to the e-newsletter! I hope everyone finds it informative and useful.
A couple events to add, thanks to Carl McDaniel, '64, Chair of EnviroAlums:
Oberlin's first Environmental Reunion sponsored by the Alumni Office, EnviroAlums, and ENVS Dept will be held on Oct 9-11, 2009. Hosted by the Environmental Studies Program and EnviroAlums, the Oberlin Environmental Reunion is a weekend of reflection and projection.
The nation’s foremost environmental educator, Oberlin’s David Orr, gives the keynote address on Friday, October 9 and concludes the weekend on Sunday with his symposium From Here to There: Visions of a Prosperous, Post-Carbon Region. The “meat” between these Nine Grain slices of vision is not to be missed!

Secondly, Carl McDaniel's new home, Trail Magic, a climate-neutral, positive-energy home in Oberlin, will have an open house on the OH Solar Tour day, Sunday, Oct 4, from 12 to 4 PM. It is perhaps the most energy efficient home in Oberlin and its energy bill for the first year was zero. All energy came from on site sunshine. The builder, architect, and geothermal person will be at the open house.

Welcome!
This is the new blog for the Cleveland Club of Oberlin Alumni. I'll be posting upcoming events on this site, both official club events, as well as events that alumni would like publicized. This blog will essentially be the same as our e-newsletter, just a different format.
Coming right off of Alumni Council Weekend, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Kira McGirr, class of 2006, and I am delighted to be your new regional coordinator. I hope that I'll get to meet all of you over the next few months as we have events.
A little about myself: I live in Oberlin, with my husband, Charles McGuire, '91/'92, professor of musicology at the Conservatory. I am the store supervisor at the Oberlin Bookstore, and sing with the Cleveland Opera chorus. I love being outdoors, biking, camping, swimming, etc; working in my garden and am an avid reader.
To start off the newsletter, here are two events that will be happening in Oberlin over the next week. My apologies for the short notice, but the newsletter has to start somewhere!
On Thursday, September 17, at 4:45pm, in Craig Auditorium at the Science Center, Dan Chaon, Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Oberlin, will be reading from his newest novel Await Your Reply. Professor Chaon is the author of Among the Missing, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and You Remind Me of Me, which was named on of the best books of the year by The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, The Christian Science Monitor, and Entertainment Weekly, among other publications. Kazim Ali, Assistant Professor of Creative Writing, and Jessica Grim, Lecturer in the Creative Writing Department, will be reading from their most recent works on Monday, September 21 from 7:00pm - 8:00pm at the Oberlin Public Library. Professor Ali most recently authored the novella The Disappearance of Seth and memoir Bright Felon. Ms. Grim's most recent book is titled Vexed.
Please keep an eye out for an invitation to our next official regional event, which will be held at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage on Sunday, October 11, at 3pm. All details will be included in the invitation.
I welcome all of your thoughts, suggestions and help in planning events that are appealing and interesting.doing so.
