December Newsletter

I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving holiday. It’s always nice to have a chance to be with family and friends, and to have a few extra days off. Oberlin has already had its first snow (although it had nearly disappeared by noon), and Santa was greeted by a large crowd on Friday as he rode into town on the fire engine. I guess the holidays are truly upon us – no escaping it now!

Speaking of the holidays, please join the Oberlin Club of Cleveland on Friday, December 18 at 8pm as we celebrate with the sounds of the Cleveland Orchestra and Chorus in the festive splendor of Severance Hall. The Cleveland Orchestra is located at 11001 Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, OH 44106.

Tickets for the Main Floor Orchestra level are $48. As tickets are limited, please register for this event by calling the alumni office at (440) 775-8692 or by registering online here.

Prior to the performance, we are encouraging alumni to gather near the bar in Smith Lobby at 7:15.

The entrance to the Case Western Reserve University Campus Center Garage is located on the east side of East Blvd. Between Bellflower Road and Euclid Avenue. Severance Hall can be accessed through the parking garage.

Save-The-Date: Stay tuned for more details regarding an event in January at Black River Cafe with Cleveland area Obies and Joe Waltzer '98, owner of Black River Cafe. There will be a prix-fixe menu with cash bar.

As usual, much is happening on campus, especially as the semester winds down. The events board in the Conservatory is covered with upcoming concert programs! Check out the Events Calendar at http://new.oberlin.edu/calendar for more information.

A few selected on-campus events are listed here:

On Thursday, December 3 at 5pm, Erik Inglis, Professor of Art, will present a lecture entitled “The Stars above Paris: Monuments to François Arago, the greatest astronomer in 19th-century France.” In conjunction with the “Starry Dome” exhibition, Professor Inglis will lecture on monuments to Francois Arago, a renowned astronomer in France in the 19th century and the subject of a major 1994 Parisian monument by the Dutch conceptual artist Jan Dibbets.

This lecture will take place in Classroom 1 of the Allen Memorial Art Building, which is located at 87 North Main Street, Oberlin, OH.

On December 4th (8pm), 5th (2pm) and 6th (2pm), Oberlin Musical Theater Association presents THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE, a one-act musical comedy. Six young people in the throes of puberty, overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, learn that winning isn't everything and that losing doesn't necessarily make you a loser.

Tickets may be purchased at Wilder Desk ($3) or at the door ($4). Performances will be held in Wilder Main in Wilder Hall (Student Union), located at 135 West Lorain St., Oberlin, OH 44074-1097.

Under the direction of Steven Plank, Collegium Musicum will present its fall concert on Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5. Both performances are at 8pm, in Fairchild Chapel, located at 50 West Lorain Street in Oberlin, OH. The performances are free.

The Oberlin Orchestra returns to the Finney Chapel stage on Sunday, December 6 at 8pm to present Mahler's monumental Symphony No. 2 ("Resurrection") in partnership with the Musical Union Chorus, directed by Associate Professor of Choral Conducting Hugh Floyd. The 80- to 90-minute work, with its inspiring choral finale, is the only piece on the program.

The fall orchestra season concludes with a concert on Tuesday, December 8 at 8pm, in Finney Chapel, by the Oberlin Chamber Orchestra. The program includes a performance by concerto competition winner and Oberlin violinist Chingis Khannanov. Khannanov, an artist diploma student, will perform Paganini's virtuosic Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 6. The concert also features Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 and Schumann's Symphony No. 2.

Salsa Dancing in Cleveland over Thanksgiving Weekend

Ed Trager '86, who currently lives in Ann Arbor, is back to the area for the Thanksgiving Holiday. He contacted me wondering if anyone might be interested in checking out the Salsa dance scene on either Friday, November 27 at The View (618 Prospect) or on Saturday, November 28 at La Boca (5800 Detroit).

It looks like La Boca is also a restaurant, so a possibility for Saturday would be to go to La Boca for dinner and then just stay for dancing. It looks like both the View and La Boca have lessons starting at 9 PM, so previous Salsa experience would not be a prerequisite.

Please contact Ed at ed [dot] trager [at] gmail [dot] com

Happy Thanksgiving!

Opera Cleveland, Don Giovanni and Alumni

Opera Cleveland's production of Don Giovanni had quite a successful run (if I do say so myself!). The final performance had a nearing capacity crowd - so perhaps opera isn't dead after all!

It was my first opera with Opera Cleveland, and I had a blast. It was also great getting to know other Obies involved in the production, including Alyson Cambridge '01, who gorgeously sang (and acted) the role of Donna Elvira; Charles Griffith '60, plying his trade in the pit on cello; Patrick Wickliffe '05, who helped the chorus get into note-perfect shape; and Christian Behrens '09 (not pictured), who also joined us in the pit as a harbinger of death on trombone. (Did you know that whenever trombones are heard, it usually signals impending death, at least in operas written before 1810?)

The Wooden Synagogue in Multiple Perspective

The Oberlin College Art Department, the Program in Jewish Studies, and the Friends of the Library will be presenting a panel entitled The Wooden Synagogue in Multiple Perspective, on Sunday, November 22 at 2pm in Mudd Center 050, Moffett Auditorium. This panel features Marc Epstein '85, Associate Professor of Religion and Jewish Studies, Vassar College; Thomas Hubka, Professor of Architecture, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee; and Shulamit Magnus, Associate Professor of Jewish Studies, Oberlin College.

This is the closing event for Wooden Synagogues: Recovering History Through Art and Architecture, an exhibition coordinated by Rick and Laura Brown of Handshouse Studio in Norwell, Massachusetts.

Visit the Oberlin Events Calendar for more information.

November Newsletter

For some reason, it appears that the November e-newsletter hasn't gone out as I thought it would. I will check on that Thursday morning, when the Alumni Association Office re-opens. For now, here are the parts of the newsletter that haven't already appeared on the blog!

As a quick reminder, don't forget about the Fall Potluck on Saturday, November 14th at 7pm. Click here for more information and to RSVP. Or scroll down the blog to the Fall Potluck posting!

Ultimate Brownies, mentioned before on this blog, was named Best of Cleveland by the Cleveland Magazine! Ultimate Brownies is run by Diana Dumitru '90. She is still campaigning to win on the Fox8 Hotlist as Best of Cleveland. Go here to vote. The contest ends November 13, 2009.

An event with the Cleveland Orchestra is in the works for Friday, December 18th. We are hoping to have a reception before the concert and be joined by some of the alumni who are members of the orchestra. Please stay tuned for more information!

As usual, much is happening on-campus. The following is just a very small selection of events - check out the Events Calendar for complete listings.

On Friday, November 6 at 8pm in Finney Chapel, concerto competition winner and Oberlin senior pianist Siyuan Li will perform Saint-Saëns' Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Oberlin Orchestra, conducted by Bridget-Michaele Reischl, Music Director of the Oberlin Orchestras. The program also includes three ballet works: Beethoven's Overture to Prometheus, a suite from Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé, and Georges Auric's Phèdre.

On Saturday, November 7 at 3pm in Hallock Auditorium at the Adam Joseph Lewis Center, Josh Neufeld OC '89 will be discussing his just published book "AD: New Orleans after the Deluge," a graphic memoir that grew from his experiences as a Red Cross volunteer in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Josh will introduce the book in relation to his other work, touching on his background as an alternative cartoonist, including his work with Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor. Then he'll talk about how the A.D. project evolved from his volunteer experience, his conception of A.D., its use of multimedia elements, and particularly the artistic/visual decisions he made when creating it. After this presentation, Josh will be joined by Kwame Webster, a current Oberlin student who is in the book, and Caroline Jackson Smith, Associate Professor of Theater and African American Studies, who will moderate a discussion between Josh and Kwame about their perspectives on the issues raised by the the book. The presentation will also give the audience a chance to ask questions, and will end with a book-signing.

The fall Oberlin Opera Theater production of Così fan tutte by W. A. Mozart opens on November 18 at 8pm in Hall Auditorium, with additional performances on November 20, 21 and 22. The opera is conducted by Meastra Reischl and directed by Jonathon Field. The Oberlin Chamber Orchestra will be playing in the pit. Hall Auditorium is located at 67 North Main Street. Tickets range from $5 to $12 and are available from the Central Ticket Service, at 800.371.0178 or at the box office in the auditorium lobby.

Opera Cleveland presents Don Giovanni

Oooh, it's been a bit since I last updated, hasn't it? My apologies! The very thing that I'm posting about is the very thing that has been preventing me from posting!

Opera Cleveland's fall production of Don Giovanni stars Alyson Cambridge '01 in the role of Donna Elvira. Alyson is a frequent guest of the Metropolitan Opera, having made her debut in 2004 under the baton of James Levine as Frasquita in Carmen. She has also sung with Washington National Opera, Atlanta Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis and Wolf Trap Opera, to name but a few.

A number of other Obies are involved in the production, including Kira McGirr '06 (your very own Regional Coordinator), women's chorus; Patrick Wickliffe '05, Assistant Chorus Master; Charles Griffith '60, cello; and Christian Behrens '09, trombone.

Under the stage direction of John Hoomes and the set design of Kris Stone, modernity and tradition come together in a visually arresting production, with characters in period costume juxtaposed with strikingly abstract modern sets. Experience Moxart's masterpiece as you never have before!

The final performance is Saturday, November 7th at 8pm. For more information about the opera and tickets, please visit Opera Cleveland or contact the Playhouse Square ticket office at 866-546-1353.

Ultimate Brownies

Ultimate Brownies, the only brownie shop in the Cleveland area, is run by Diana Dumitru, '90! What a fantastic shop to have in our area! Do check out her website and shop - the brownies look absolutely delicious. I know a trip to her shop is in store (oops, no pun intended) for my family!

Ultimate Brownies are made with organic eggs, hormone-free butter, unbleached flour, Swiss chocolate and no preservatives - good for the environment and good for you! They are available in a dozen flavors.

Ultimate Brownies has been nominated on the Fox8 Hotlist as Best of Cleveland. If Obies are interested in voting, click here. Ultimate Brownies held the lead for a while, but is now in 2nd place, so they need Obies to win! The contest ends November 13, 2009.

The store is located at 19636 Center Ridge Road, Rocky River, OH 44116.

Good luck, Diana!

EnviroAlums in Oberlin

My apologies to EnviroAlums - the blurb about their upcoming reunion on October 9-11, 2009 was inadvertently left out of the e-newsletter. Due to when the e-newsletter went out, one paragraph needed to be taken out (as the event had already passed) but two were taken out. Again, my apologies, and here is the information about the reunion.

Oberlin's first Environmental Reunion sponsored by the Alumni Office, EnviroAlums, and ENVS Department will be held on October 9-11, 2009. Hosted by the Environmental Studies Program and EnviroAlums, the Oberlin Environmental Reunion is a weekend of reflection and projection.

The nation's foremost environmental educator, Oberlin's David Orr, gives the keynote address on Friday, October 9 and concludes the weekend on Sunday with his symposium "From Here to There: Visions of a Prosperous, Post-Carbon Region." The rest of the weekend is also not to be missed.

Please visit the Alumni Office for a statement about the reunion with links to reunion information.

As usual, spouses, partners, family and friends are all welcome. Please join us for a casual evening of good food and good conversation.

A-G bring dessert/wine/beer
H-O bring main dish

Paper products and some beverages will be provided.

Once the invitation goes out from the Alumni Office, please do RSVP, so we know how many to expect.

Maltz Museum and Oberlin Cares Day

Happy October, Alumni! I always look forward to the changes that fall means, and this year is not disappointing! The trees are starting to change color, apple cider is available at the stores and the sunlight has taken on a golden fall cast.

As you have probably read, our October event will be on Sunday, October 11, for a special Oberlin alumni day at The Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage for a tour with Mark Davidson, '84, Manager of School and Family Programs. I hope you can all come out and join us as he leads a tour of the museum and their October exhibit, "Cleveland: A Celebration of Cultures." After the tour, we will meet at The Fairmount Martini and Wine Bar, in Cleveland Heights, for drinks, food and conversation.

The tour will begin at 3pm and last approximately an hour, however alumni are welsome to arrive as early as they wish to take advantage of the other events going on that day.

The Maltz Museum is located at 2929 Richmond Road, Beachwood, OH. Parking is available at the museum. The Fairmount is located at 2448 Fairmount Blvd, Cleveland Heights, OH. They are about 7 miles apart. On-street parking only.

In order to give alumni time to browse on their own at the museum, we will meet at The Fairmount beginning at 5:15 and go until 7:30.

Please do RSVP if you are interest in attending one or both of the events, by sending me an e-mail: kmcgirr [at] gmail [dot] com.

Looking forward to the future, during Alumni Council weekend we came up with the idea of having an "Oberlin Cares Day" on April 17, 2010. This happens to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. We thought it would be incredible if Obies across the nation all performed some sort of service project in their area on the same date. Whether it's sorting food at an area food bank, cleaning up a bike path or working in a community garden, Oberlin Cares Day will bring alumni, students and friends together, offering a chance to connect with each other while completing an important service project and giving back to the local community. What a way to take our celebrated Oberlin service spirit to the streets! Ideally, we would like to be able to grow this event each year.

But to achieve this goal, I need your help. Please contact me by e-mail (
kmcgirr [at] gmail [dot] com) if you would like to help plan this event, so we can come up with great ideas and then implement them. Oberlin Cares Day is a fantastic idea, and I'm incredibly excited by it. I can't wait to work together with you!

Ensemble Les Délices inaugurates Gallery Concert Series

Debra Nagy, '00 and '02, asked me to publicize the inaugural concert in a Gallery Concert Series that she is starting this fall in Cleveland with her chamber group, Les Délices. Michael Sponseller, '97 and '00, will also be performing as part of the group.

Ensemble
Les Délices inaugurates a new Gallery Concert Series at the William Busta Gallery (2731 Prospect Ave., Cleveland) on Saturday, October 10, 2009. Audience members will have the opportunity to enjoy the gallery (which will open at 7:30pm), an informal hour-long concert (starting at 8:00pm), and a reception.

As Les Délices' director Debra Nagy explains, "The kind of music we perform was originally enjoyed in 'salons' that fostered interactions between performers, composers, patrons, and artists. I'm interested in cultivating that atmosphere in the present day. The audience will be invited to come early, check out the art and get comfortable in the space. The concert itself will feel informal and inclusive, lasting about an hour. Afterward, we'll all be able to enjoy a reception where it's my hope that the interplay between the art and music will be the jumping off point for conservations. It's my hope, too, that people coming to concerts in Cleveland's gallery districts will discover and enjoy all that these reborn art neighborhoods have to offer."

Les Délices will present a total of three Gallery Concerts this year. Besides their inaugural concert on October 10, they will perform at Tregoning & Company (1300 W. 78th St inside the W. 78th St. Studios Complex) on Saturday, February 20 and on Saturday, May 22, 2010.

More information about Les Délices and tickets for all concerts in the series are available at Les Délices.

EnviroAlums in Oberlin

Wow! What a response I've had to the e-newsletter! I hope everyone finds it informative and useful.

A couple events to add, thanks to Carl McDaniel, '64, Chair of EnviroAlums:

Oberlin's first Environmental Reunion sponsored by the Alumni Office, EnviroAlums, and ENVS Dept will be held on Oct 9-11, 2009. Hosted by the Environmental Studies Program and EnviroAlums, the Oberlin Environmental Reunion is a weekend of reflection and projection.

The nation’s foremost environmental educator, Oberlin’s David Orr, gives the keynote address on Friday, October 9 and concludes the weekend on Sunday with his symposium From Here to There: Visions of a Prosperous, Post-Carbon Region. The “meat” between these Nine Grain slices of vision is not to be missed!

Please visit the Alumni Association home page for a statement about the reunion with links to reunion information.

Secondly, Carl McDaniel's new home, Trail Magic, a climate-neutral, positive-energy home in Oberlin, will have an open house on the OH Solar Tour day, Sunday, Oct 4, from 12 to 4 PM. It is perhaps the most energy efficient home in Oberlin and its energy bill for the first year was zero. All energy came from on site sunshine. The builder, architect, and geothermal person will be at the open house.

Trail Magic is located at 495 East College Street, Oberlin, OH 44074. For an introduction to the house and to Carl, please click here. You can also access a PDF about Trail Magic by visiting this page and clicking on "Trail Magic" in the left bar.

Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather.

Welcome!

This is the new blog for the Cleveland Club of Oberlin Alumni. I'll be posting upcoming events on this site, both official club events, as well as events that alumni would like publicized. This blog will essentially be the same as our e-newsletter, just a different format.

Coming right off of Alumni Council Weekend, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Kira McGirr, class of 2006, and I am delighted to be your new regional coordinator. I hope that I'll get to meet all of you over the next few months as we have events.

A little about myself: I live in Oberlin, with my husband, Charles McGuire, '91/'92, professor of musicology at the Conservatory. I am the store supervisor at the Oberlin Bookstore, and sing with the Cleveland Opera chorus. I love being outdoors, biking, camping, swimming, etc; working in my garden and am an avid reader.

To start off the newsletter, here are two events that will be happening in Oberlin over the next week. My apologies for the short notice, but the newsletter has to start somewhere!

On Thursday, September 17, at 4:45pm, in Craig Auditorium at the Science Center, Dan Chaon, Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Oberlin, will be reading from his newest novel Await Your Reply. Professor Chaon is the author of Among the Missing, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and You Remind Me of Me, which was named on of the best books of the year by The Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, The Christian Science Monitor, and Entertainment Weekly, among other publications. For more information, please visit http://new.oberlin.edu/calendar/index.dot?id=1317372

Kazim Ali, Assistant Professor of Creative Writing, and Jessica Grim, Lecturer in the Creative Writing Department, will be reading from their most recent works on Monday, September 21 from 7:00pm - 8:00pm at the Oberlin Public Library. Professor Ali most recently authored the novella The Disappearance of Seth and memoir Bright Felon. Ms. Grim's most recent book is titled Vexed.

Please keep an eye out for an invitation to our next official regional event, which will be held at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage on Sunday, October 11, at 3pm. All details will be included in the invitation.

I welcome all of your thoughts, suggestions and help in planning events that are appealing and interesting.doing so. Please contact me by e-mail (kmcgirr [at] gmail [dot] com) if you are interested in being on the steering committee for the Cleveland Club, or have an idea for an event. If you'd like to have your event or announcement included in the e-newsletter, and on the blog, please contact me at the above e-mail me no later than the 25th of every month to be included in the next month's e-newsletter. The e-newsletter will be sent sometime during the first week of each month. Please be sure to leave plenty of time for publicity!

Looking forward to meeting you all!
