November – Annual Fall Potluck
Vikki and Richard Broida ’79 have been kind enough to open their Cleveland Heights house to Cleveland-area Oberlin Alumni, Friends and Family for this year’s annual fall potluck. It will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011 with a start time of 7:00pm.

December – An Evening with Professor T.S. McMillin
Join Professor of English T.S. McMillin at Visible Voice Books in Tremont on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 7:00pm for a book reading and signing. Professor McMillin will be reading from his latest book, The Meaning of Rivers: Flow & Reflection in American Literature (American Land & Life Series, University of Iowa Press, 2011). Visible Voices was voted “coolest bookstore to hang out in” by Scene Magazine in 2010, and has a great atmosphere with a wine bar.

January – An Evening with Debra Nagy ‘00/’02 and Les Délices
Join Les Délices as they bring alive the world of dance with Caractères de la danse at 8:00pm on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Tregoning & Co. Gallery in Cleveland. Constitution Day Speaker
On Wednesday, September 14, Louise Melling '82 will give a talk titled "I have Sex: Why to Care about Reproductive Rights in the 21st Century" from 4:30-5:30 in West Lecture Hall. No tickets are required.

Louise Melling is a Deputy Legal Director of the ACLU and the Director of the ACLU’s Center for Liberty. The Center encompasses the ACLU’s work on reproductive freedom, women’s rights, lesbian gay bisexual and transgender rights, and freedom of religion and belief. Before assuming the role of Deputy Legal Director in 2010, Ms. Melling was Director of the ACLU Reproductive Freedom Project, in which capacity she oversaw nationwide litigation, communications research, public education campaigns, and advocacy efforts in the state legislatures. Ms. Melling has appeared in federal and state courts around the country to challenge laws that restrict reproductive rights. She has appeared in many media outlets, including Good Morning America, MSNBC, Frontline, the New York Times, Washington Post, and Newsweek.

Murphy Colloquium featuring Christopher Macklin
A guest lecture entitled “Musica sanat corpus per animam”: The Black Death and the Composition of a Plainsong Mass, by Christopher Macklin, Assistant Professor of Music at Mercer University, will be presented as part of the 2011-12 Murphy Colloquium Series on Wednesday, September 14 from 7:30-8:30pm in Kulas Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Christopher Macklin is currently the Assistant Professor of Music History/Musicology at the Townsend School of Music, Mercer University in Macon, Georgia (USA). His research primarily focuses on the relationship between music and scribal cultures, particularly in the late medieval period, and has been published in journals such as Early Music, The Journal of the Royal Musical Association, and Early Music History.

A Vocal Celebration of Verdi
On Friday, September 23 from 8:00-10:00pm, The Consulate of Italy in Detroit in partnership with Oberlin College Conservatory of Music is pleased to present a Celebration of Verdi in honor of the 110th Anniversary of Verdi's death. Along with a power-point presentation, Oberlin Conservatory vocal music students will perform some of the most popular Verdi songs, opera arias, and duets, accompanied at the piano.

Come celebrate the diversity within Oberlin and raise awareness of languages and cultures from around the world on Saturday, September 24 from 12:00-4:00pm.
